Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)

Math- Students reviewed their learning of adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators. They solved story problems involving adding and subtracting fractions.

Reading- Students are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. We discuss the book together, including analyzing characters, making predictions, describing the various settings of the book, and more.

Word Study- Students are learning about Latin and Greek root words. So far we have learned that port means to carry/bring or door/entrance and word examples are transport, import, export, teleport, airport. Next we studied the Greek root phon(e), meaning "sound." Some word examples are homophone, telephone, phonics, microphone, and xylophone. Finally, we studeid the Latin root aqua and the Greek root hydro. These both mean water and examples are aquarium, aqueduct, hydrate, and hydroplane.

Writing- Students finished writing their poems for the poetry share. We made many digital copies of poems. The creativity was excellent. Now students are moving toward independent and group writing projects, using everything they have learned this year in writing.

Science- We are learning about force and simple machines. We learned that forces act on an object and net force is the combination of all forces on that object. When the net force is zero, then the object is at rest. Only after the net force is different than zero, the object moves. We did an investigation with net force moving books and did three investigations about the wheel and axle is a simple machine that helps make work easier.
