Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)

Math- Students reviewed all the standards of learning for the third grade math curriculum. It was a great review because some of the learning hadn't stuck. That's why we spiral back to strengthen the concepts learned earlier in the year. We took the math SOL. Great job everyone!

Reading- Students have learned to read poems with rhythm and rhyme. Many students read poems in front of the class, clapping as they spoke with rhythm. We read several poems for pure enjoyment and entertainment. We also analyzed the poems in how they made us feel, the message of the poem, and poetic devices used.

Word Study- Students are learning about negating prefixes. The 6 prefixes we are learning is mis-, non-, im, il-, ir-, and in-. Some examples of those words are misinterpret, nonchalant, impassable, illiterate, irregular, and indestructible.

Writing- Students are writing poems with a template that use rhythm and rhyming. They are using a website called "rhymezone" to find rhymes. This has proven to be a difficult task! Students used rhymes to invent ice cream flavors with a partner.

Science- We will take a break from science and study simple machines in a few weeks.

Social studies- Students learned how the people of ancient Rome adapted to their land by trading, farming where possible, and roadbuilding. They learned some of the important contributions of ancient Rome such as arches in their architecture, aqueducts, representative democracy, and mosaics. They are now crafting a picture that encompasses one of these very important contributions. They answered several written response questions about the particular contribution that they selected.

Kid's Business Day- May 25
