The Last Week
June 12-16
Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)
Math- Students learned how to multiply 2-digit by 1-digit numbers. We broke the number down. For example 14 x 4 = (10x4) + (4x4). The concept of decomposing numbers should be transferred to larger equations as they advance in grade levels and computation of larger numbers.
Reading- Students are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. We discuss the book together, including analyzing characters, making predictions, describing the various settings of the book, and more. We watched the 70s movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and students all wrote a compare/contrast essay. We started reading Charlotte's Web.
Word Study- Students learned about the roots aqua/hydra which means water, vid/vis which means "see," and pel/puls which means "drive" or "push."
Writing- Students learned the proper way to use the articles "a" and "an." "A" comes before a consonant sounding noun and "an" comes before a vowel sounding noun. We also learned the proper usages of there, their, and they're. The class also is working on independent and group writing free-writing projects. We are also learning all the cursive letters. We have 5 more to go!
Science- We are learning about force and simple machines. We investigated the wheel and axle, wedge, inclined plane, lever, and screw this week. We did hands-on investigations for all 4 of those simple machines. Next week we will study the pulley as well as how compound machines work.
