Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)
Math- Students learned equivalent time periods, for example, how many minutes is 3 hours (180 min). They converted basic equations with seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, and years. They learned the concept of elapsed time and computed elapsed time story problems with hour increments. We tested our knowledge with a quiz on Friday.
Reading- Students worked to create a biography mind map of a person they studied. They found resources about their person. They wrote important facts, found the person's achievements and contributions, wrote ideas about their personality, and developed a theory about them based on text evidence.
Word Study- Students learned about irregular plural nouns, including adding -s or-es. We learned the rule when a noun ends in a -y to change the suffix to -ies. We also learned when a noun ends in an -f, to change the plural suffix to -ves.
Writing- Students finished their realistic fiction stories. They used paragraphing and elaboration. We are sharing our storied at the end of the day today in small groups.
Science- Students are learning about the science of soil. We walked around the school yard to find positives and negatives about the soil. We are going to learn how to scientists fix problems with soil such as erosion.
3rd Grade Music Performance
This Wednesday the third grade will have a music performance. It starts at 9:30 in the cafeteria. Parents should arrive early if you are attending.
Staff Basketball Game
Staff at Spring Hill are playing staff from Forestville at McLean High School. Doors open at 6:30 PM and the game starts at 7:00 PM. Tickets are $10. Come to support our staff, have fun, and this also helps raise money for our school!
SOL Review
SOL stands for "Standards of Learning." It's what we call our standardized testing in the state of Virginia. It starts in third grade, so it's the first year your child will take the test. Third graders take two SOLs: reading and math. I will start sending SOL review sheets that are optional. I recommend doing this for the practice. You should print them off at home. I will send home one math and one reading section each week.
Academic Work at Home
If you are looking for academic work for your child to complete when there is a day off school, if your child will be staying home and is well enough to do work, or maybe you are traveling and you'd like to bring some work with them, then here are some recommendations. These are all programs which are done on the computer.
