Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)

Math- Students have worked on rounding 4-digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred, and thousand. This is an important skill which involves number sense and should be able to be done fluently for real-world success in math. We have worked on comparing and ordering larger numbers (4-6 digit). We have learned how to estimate sums and differences and apply that to real-world story problems (up to 4-digit sums and differences).

Reading- Students are learning the characteristics of biographies and autobiographies. They explored some biographies this week. They read books on myON about ancient Greece too.

Word Study- Students learned about the suffix "able/ible" and how it changes a word to an adjective. Usually when the suffix -"able" is used the base word can stand alone, for example workable and teachable. The suffix is usually "-ible" when the word is a Greek or Latin root and cant stand alone, for example visible.

Writing- Students have been learning about paragraphing. We learned that a paragraph is a group of related sentences. A new paragraph can begin when something changes such as the topic, time, place, or speaker. They are learning how to elaborate storytelling by using dialogue, describing the setting, telling what the characters are thinking, describing actions, and using specific vocabulary. Stories will be published and shared this week.

History- Students are learning about ancient Greece had a powerful influence on our modern day. We have learned how the ancient Greeks adapted to their land. Since their land was so mountainous, they had to farm where possible and form close communities to help gain resources. Secondly, they used the Mediterranean sea to fish and trade for resources.

Fun Fair- Sat, March 18

Fun Fair is one of the most exciting days of the year at Spring Hill Elementary School!  For one Saturday in Spring, our school building is transformed into a carnival with fun for all ages that brings our community together to support Spring Hill’s PTO. This school tradition brings smiles to all faces with four hours of games, raffles, prizes, and so much more! The event is open to the public, so bring your family and friends for a fantastic day of FUN!

Fun Fair tickets are needed to play any game or participate in activities, like laser tag and the Sporty Spa. Discounted tickets are available for purchase online in advance or at school the week before Fun Fair (March 13-17). Tickets will also be sold at Fun Fair.

Please plan for your family to attend, and for at least one adult in your household to volunteer to help make this a fun and safe day for our kids!

Academic Work at Home

If you are looking for academic work for your child to complete when there is a day off school, if your child will be staying home and is well enough to do work, or maybe you are traveling and you'd like to bring some work with them, then here are some recommendations. These are all programs which are done on the computer.
