Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)

Math- Students have worked to how to estimate sums and differences and apply that to real-world story problems (up to 4-digit sums and differences). We practiced adding and subtracting (up to 4-digit numbers) using the standard algorithm (what you probably learned in school). We applied that to real-world story problems. Then we took it a step further to solve 2-step story problems. This was difficult for many!

Reading- Students explored many biographies this week. We read a biography of Harriet Tubman together, identified her hardships and contributions. Then we wrote ideas that we had about her (drawing conclusions). Students also read books on myON about ancient Greece and stories from ancient Greece

Word Study- Students learned about how adjectives can be changed into adverbs by adding an "-ly" suffix. We explored words with the "-ly" suffix and how to spell them and notice the root word.

Writing- Students finished typing their stories. We shared them and gave positive feedback for each story.

History- Students are learning about ancient Greece had a powerful influence on our modern day. This week we learned some of the natural, capital, and human resources they had access to to make them a strong civilization. We also discussed various ways that people bartered and traded in ancient times and discussed ways that we can do that in today's society.

Field Trip Thurs Mar, 30.

The third grade will be visiting the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. In the first quarter we learned about animal adaptations first quarter in science. Animals have physical and behavioral characteristics that help them to survive in particular environments. We also learned second quarter about ancient Egypt and how it used its resources to become a civilization that has had influence on our modern world. We want to revisit these topics by traveling to the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History!

I will be sending permission slips home next week. Please send back the completed form to school. The cost is $10 which can be paid on myschoolbucks.com.  You will receive a flier too with more details about trips such as lunches. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to chaperone.

Fun Fair- This Sat, March 18

Fun Fair is one of the most exciting days of the year at Spring Hill Elementary School!  For one Saturday in Spring, our school building is transformed into a carnival with fun for all ages that brings our community together to support Spring Hill’s PTO. This school tradition brings smiles to all faces with four hours of games, raffles, prizes, and so much more! The event is open to the public, so bring your family and friends for a fantastic day of FUN!

Fun Fair tickets are needed to play any game or participate in activities, like laser tag and the Sporty Spa. Discounted tickets are available for purchase online in advance or at school the week before Fun Fair (March 13-17). Tickets will also be sold at Fun Fair.

Please plan for your family to attend, and for at least one adult in your household to volunteer to help make this a fun and safe day for our kids!

Academic Work at Home

If you are looking for academic work for your child to complete when there is a day off school, if your child will be staying home and is well enough to do work, or maybe you are traveling and you'd like to bring some work with them, then here are some recommendations. These are all programs which are done on the computer.
