Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)

Math- Students have learned how to read, write, and build 6-digit numbers. They have learned about the place value (thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands) and how our Hindu-Arabic number system follows certain patterns. They have learned how to round 4-digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. We will build on place value concepts next week, along with estimating larger sums and differences (up to 4-digit).

Reading- Students are learning the characteristics of biographies and autobiographies. They are learning what to expect when they read a biography. We also learned how to find the meaning of unknown words by using the context. We look for clues around the unknown word to figure out what it means. Students have increased their vocabularies by reading The Twits, by Roald Dahl together.

Word Study- Students learned the end syllable of consonant + le (C + le). Examples of these words are juggle, apple, stable, etc. We learned that these words make an "ool" sound. We practiced many spelling words that have this pattern. Secondly, we are learning about the suffix "able/ible" and how it changes a word to an adjective.

Writing- Students have been learning about paragraphing. We learned that a paragraph is a group of related sentences. We have been practicing using paragraphing in our writing- which is complicated for 3rd graders! Students are continuing to draft their own story in a planning packet. They are learning how to elaborate storytelling by using dialogue, describing the setting, telling what the characters are thinking, describing actions, and using specific vocabulary. We will hopefully finish typing these stories next week, and on Friday, publish and share them with peers.

History- Students are learning about ancient Greece had a powerful influence on our modern day. We have started off by studying about the geography of Greece and how the ancient civilization changed over time as the empire rose and fell. We are also using tour modes in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey to explore ancient Greece.

Fun Fair- Sat, March 18

Fun Fair is one of the most exciting days of the year at Spring Hill Elementary School!  For one Saturday in Spring, our school building is transformed into a carnival with fun for all ages that brings our community together to support Spring Hill’s PTO. This school tradition brings smiles to all faces with four hours of games, raffles, prizes, and so much more! The event is open to the public, so bring your family and friends for a fantastic day of FUN!

Fun Fair tickets are needed to play any game or participate in activities, like laser tag and the Sporty Spa. Discounted tickets are available for purchase online in advance or at school the week before Fun Fair (March 13-17). Tickets will also be sold at Fun Fair.

Please plan for your family to attend, and for at least one adult in your household to volunteer to help make this a fun and safe day for our kids!

Academic Work at Home

If you are looking for academic work for your child to complete when there is a day off school, if your child will be staying home and is well enough to do work, or maybe you are traveling and you'd like to bring some work with them, then here are some recommendations. These are all programs which are done on the computer.
