Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)
Math- Students worked with money all this week. We counted sums up to $5.00. We practiced comparing sums of money. Finally, we practiced making change from a $5 bill. Next Friday we will have a math test.
Reading- Students explored women's biographies to celebrate women's history month. They studied a woman of choice and analyzed their life, drawing conclusions about her personality and using text evidence.
Word Study- Students learned about how adjectives can be changed into adverbs by adding an "-ly" suffix. We explored words with the "-ly" suffix and how to spell them and notice the root word.
Writing- Students are learning to write realistic fiction stories. We are using the writing process. We started with a plan and organization in a graphic organizer. Many students have started writing their realistic fiction story. We are also creating a realistic fiction story as a class. This is so students are modeled what good writing looks like.
History- Students learned about making economic choices in ancient Greece. We learned about the popular jobs and human resources in ancient Greece. We reviewed everything we learned and took a quiz. These should be appearing in Thursday folders next week.
Field Trip Thurs Mar, 30.
Please send back the completed form to school. The cost is $10 which can be paid on myschoolbucks.com. Let me know if you have any questions or would like to chaperone.
SOL Review
SOL stands for "Standards of Learning." It's what we call our standardized testing in the state of Virginia. It starts in third grade, so it's the first year your child will take the test. Third graders take two SOLs: reading and math. I will start sending SOL review sheets that are optional. I recommend doing this for the practice. You should print them off at home. I will send home one math and one reading section each week.
Fun Fair-Today, March 18

Barber Shop Cancelled
Unfortunately, Nalley's barber shop will be cancelled this year. I hurt my back a couple weeks ago and I need more time to recover. I cant to much bending. Sorry if you planned to use my services. I will be selling tickets from 12:45-2:30, so maybe I'll see you there!
