Academics (Summary of this past week's learning)
Math- Students have learned several strategies to build number sense with multiplication and division. We broke numbers down into smaller pieces to create manageable problems to solve. They studied number patterns and tables. Students learned the act of balancing equations with addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. We will start on our next math unit next week.
Reading- Students read articles in which we found an author's perspective. We analyzed the article, finding the author's opinions about the topic. The class shared their own perspectives and opinions and compared and contrasted them in a venn diagram.
Word Study- We learned about the suffix "-er" and "-or" which you add to a verb to make it a noun. Some examples are teach + -er = teacher, and invent + -or = inventor. We learned the spelling rule to double a consonant when adding a suffix such as jog + ing = jogging. We are now tackling words that end in a consonant + le (C + le). Examples of these words are juggle, apple, stable, etc. We learned that these words make an "ool" sound.
Writing- Students are continuing to draft their own story in a planning packet. They are learning how to elaborate storytelling by using dialogue, describing the setting, telling what the characters are thinking, describing actions, and using specific vocabulary. Some will start typing.
History- Students continued learning about how the ancient Chinese adapted to their land by mining. We also took a journey on the silk road, which is an ancient network of trade routes spanning from China to Europe.
Valentine's Party- Thank you
Thank you to the volunteers that helped with the party and food donations! The students loved the party and will remember these types of things forever. Thank you for your support with helping your child make their Valentine's goodies.
